Ovant is a job search tool run by Brian Fung. This page explains what we collect, why we have it, and what we do with it.
The short version: we collect what you give us so the app can do its job. We don't sell your data, we don't hand it to advertisers, and we don't use it to train AI models.
What we collect
Your account
Sign-in runs through Clerk, our authentication provider. It stores your name, email address and profile picture.
If you sign in with Google, Google sends us your name, email address, profile picture and Google account ID. We use them to create and identify your account. We don't ask Google for access to anything else, so Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Contacts stay out of reach.
What you put in the app
- Your profile: headline, summary, location, work history, education, skills, target roles and work preferences.
- Resumes you upload, and resumes Ovant generates for you.
- Jobs you track, companies you follow, application status and any notes you write.
- Connections you list at companies, and the messages you send with intro requests or job suggestions.
- Answers you give in Career Lab. Speech to text happens in your browser, and we store the text it produces.
Usage data
We use Vercel Analytics to count page views. It sets no cookies and builds no profile of you. Our servers keep ordinary request logs for a short time.
How we use it
- To run the app: showing your jobs, matching postings to your profile, keeping track of where each application stands.
- To generate documents: writing a resume for a specific job out of what's in your profile.
- To reply when you email us.
That is the whole list. No advertising, no data brokers, no selling your information to anyone.
AI features
Four things send your information to Anthropic's Claude API: reading a resume you upload, Career Lab questions, reading a job posting you import, and writing a generated resume. Anthropic processes what we send and returns a result. Under their commercial terms they don't use it to train their models.
You choose which model handles each feature on the AI models page in settings.
What other people can see
Ovant has a shared side and a private side.
- Shared with every Ovant user. The company directory and the list of job postings: company name, industry, job title, location, salary range and the link. Adding a company or importing a posting adds it to that shared list.
- Yours alone. Your profile, your resumes, your notes, your application statuses and the job description saved on a role you track. Other users cannot see any of it.
- Shared when you choose to.If you list a connection at a company, other users can see that you're connected there and ask you for an intro. Your name shows on requests you send and answers you give. If you invite someone by email to help with your search, they can see your target roles, the companies you follow and the jobs you track, until you remove them.
Who we share it with
A few services run parts of Ovant. Each one handles only what it needs to:
- Clerk: sign-in, account records, and which plan you are on.
- Stripe: payment processing for paid plans, through Clerk. Your card details go to Stripe and never reach us.
- Neon: the Postgres database everything is stored in.
- Vercel: hosting, file storage for resume PDFs, and page view analytics.
- Anthropic: the AI features above.
We will also hand over data if the law requires it. Nobody else gets it.
Cookies
Clerk sets cookies to keep you signed in. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
Where it lives, and for how long
Your data is stored in the United States, with Neon and Vercel. We keep it for as long as your account exists.
Ask us to delete your account and we'll remove your profile, resumes, tracked jobs, notes and connections. Two things stay: entries you added to the shared company and job posting lists, because other people rely on them, and copies inside routine database backups, which roll off on their own.
Resume PDFs are stored privately. They are not reachable by URL, and every download checks that the file belongs to you.
Your choices
- Edit or clear anything in your profile from the knowledge base page in settings.
- Delete a resume, a tracked job or a connection at any time.
- Email brian@briankfung.com for a copy of your data, or to have your account deleted.
If you live somewhere that gives you rights over your personal data, such as the EU or California, those rights apply here. Email us and we'll take care of it.
Children
Ovant is not for anyone under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
